INFORMATION ABOUT RESTORIL:-
Restoril is used to treat several types of insomnia in adults. The drug belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines; it works by enhancing the effects of a naturally calming chemical in the brain. Restoril has not been approved for use in children, and there is no universally accepted "off-label” Restoril uses at this time.
Restoril is a sleeping aid used in the short-term treatment of insomnia, a condition in which patients have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night. Restoril belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, which work by enhancing the activity of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA),a neurotransmitter in the brain that produces sedative and calming effects.
How to Use Restoril Oral:-
Read the Medication Guide and Patient Information Leaflet, if available, provided by your pharmacist before you start using temazepam and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions regarding the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, usually once nightly, 30 minutes before bedtime; or take as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
This medication may cause withdrawal reactions, especially if it has been used regularly for a longtime or in high doses. In such cases, withdrawal symptoms (such as unusual depressed/anxious mood, stomach/muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and seizures) may occur if you suddenly stop using this medication. To prevent withdrawal reactions, your doctor may reduce your dose gradually. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and report any withdrawal reactions immediately.
Although it is very unlikely to occur, this medication can also result in abnormal drug-seeking behavior (Addiction/habit forming). Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed. Properly stop the medication when so directed. This will lessen the chances of becoming addicted.
When used for an extended period, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.
You may experience trouble sleeping the first few nights after you stop taking this medication. This is called rebound insomnia and it is normal. It will usually go away after 1-2 nights. If this effect continues, contact your doctor.
Restoril Side Effects:
Common side effects of Restoril include:
* Drowsiness
* Headache
* Nervousness
* Dizziness
* Nausea
* Hangover feeling the day after taking the medication
Restoril can also cause other, more serious side effects including:
* Extensive sleepwalking
* Unusual thoughts and behavior
* Memory loss
* Anxiety
* Severe allergic reactions
Tell your doctor if you have a history of the following conditions:
* Depression or other mental illnesses
* Alcoholism or drug abuse
* Kidney or liver disease
* Lung disease, asthma or other breathing conditions
After taking Restoril, patients are at risk of waking and engaging in activities they do not remember in the morning such as driving, eating or having sex. Patients should contact their doctor immediately if they have reason to believe such an episode has occurred.
Restoril is only intended for short-term treatment and is generally not used for more than seven to 10 days. If you do not experience relief from insomnia after this time period, you may have a more serious underlying psychiatric illness that requires alternative treatment.
What to Avoid When Taking the Drug:
Patients should not drink alcohol while undergoing treatment with Restoril, as alcohol increases the risk of experiencing dangerous side effects of the medication.
You should not drive, operate machinery or engage in other potentially hazardous activities after taking Restoril until the effects of the medication have worn off and you feel fully awake.
Restoril Interactions:
Treatment with Restoril may be affected by the following medications and substances:
* Antidepressants
* Antihistamines
* Anti-anxiety medications
* Seizure medications
* Pain medications, particularly narcotics
* Sedatives
* Other sleeping aids
* Tranquilizers
* Alcohol
Restoril may interact with other medications or substances that are not listed above. Patients should talk with their doctor about the use of all other medications, vitamins or supplements before taking Restoril.
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Patients should use Restoril exactly as prescribed.
Restoril is administered in the form of an oral capsule. Most patients take 15 mg of the medication right
Before going to bed. However, some patients may require a different dose of 7.5 mg or 30 mg. Your
Doctor will establish the size of your dosage according to your individual needs.
Patients should only take Restoril if they can devote a full seven to eight hours to sleep.
Missing a Dose of Restoril
If you forget to take a dose of Restoril, but can still manage to allow seven to eight hours for sleep, you may take the medication. However, if you cannot allot the next seven to eight hours to sleep, you should not take the medication.
Patients should never take a double dose of this medication.
Restoril Overdose
Symptoms of a Restoril overdose may include severe drowsiness, confusion, and coma, reduced reflexes, slowed breathing and low blood pressure. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have taken too much of this medication.
